Scam text warning

Residents are urged to be vigilant following reports of a winter fuel text message scam.

Scammers posing as representatives of the DWP are contacting residents and directing them to a link under the guise of completing an application for an energy subsidy.

Residents should be extremely wary of unsolicited texts and phone calls and if in any doubt, should not give out personal details or click on associated links.

If you think you have been scammed, please take the following steps:

  • Stop all contact and communication with the scammer
  • Contact your bank directly on the secure hotline telephone number 159 that connects directly to your bank.
  • Contact Advice Direct Scotland for free consumer advice online or by telephone on 0808 800 9060
  • Report the scam text message to Police Scotland on 101
  • Official information on the Winter Fuel Payment can be found on the Government website.
