Amber weather warning for wind issued for Friday


The Met Office has issued an amber weather warning for wind for Friday associated with Storm Éowyn

Yellow warnings for wind and snow are also in place.

Amber warning for wind:

  • Warning runs from 6am to 9pm on Friday
  • Warning covers whole of the Scottish Borders
  • Gusts inland widely of 60-70mph and up to 80mph in some areas
  • Along exposed coasts and hills gust of 80-90mph and possibly higher
  • Power cuts and travel disruption likely
  • Risk of property damage and danger to life from flying debris
  • Be prepared for high winds
  • Yellow warning for wind:

  • Underlying yellow weather warning for wind remains in place between midnight on Thursday/Friday and 11.59pm on Friday
  • Covers whole of the region
  • Risk of strong winds and associated disruption either side of the amber weather warning period
  • A further yellow warning for wind is in place from midnight Friday/Saturday until 3pm on Saturday
  • Yellow warning for snow:

  • Warning runs from 3am to 12noon on Friday
  • Warning covers mainly western and central Borders, but does extend into northern parts of Berwickshire
  • Up to 10cm of snow possible above 300m, with up to 5cm at lower levels
  • Strong winds may result in blizzard conditions and drifting snow for a time, particularly on higher ground
  • Accumulations are likely to be fairly short lived
  • Be prepared for the cold, snow and ice
