Update on weather warnings


The Met Office has issued further weather warnings today which impact the Borders over the weekend. Please note that four weather warnings are now in place for our region.

Key information:

  • Wet and windy weekend expected, with northerly winds likely to have most impact
  • Heaviest rain likely today into Saturday
  • Risk of wave overtopping in coastal communities
  • Barriers at Eyemouth harbour will be erected Saturday and Bantry gates closed
  • Flood gates at Richmond Row, Jedburgh to be closed as a precaution this evening
  • Sandbag stores and flood grilles have been checked across the region
  • Be prepared for high winds
  • Be prepared for rain and flooding
  • Rain warning 1:

  • Warning runs from 3pm Friday to 12noon Saturday
  • Warning area covers almost all of the area, with the exception of an area along the border with England
  • 20-30mm of rain expected widely, with 50-60mm of rain possible over higher ground
  • Wintry showers above 300m
  • Some local flooding and transport disruption possible
  • Rain warning 2:

  • Warning runs from 6am to 11.59pm on Saturday 
  • Warning area covers the part of the Borders not covered by the warning above, including Newcastleton, Yetholm and Coldstream
  • Up to 20-30mm of rain expected widely, with up to 50mm possible over high ground, including the Cheviots
  • Some local flooding and transport disruption possible
  • Wind warning 1:

  • Warning runs from 3pm Friday to 6am Sunday
  • Warning area covers the western half of the Borders, essentially all areas west of the A68
  • 40-50mph winds expected widely
  • Inland gusts could reach 60mph
  • Risk of fallen trees, travel disruption, power cuts and property damage
  • Wind warning 2:

  • Warning runs from 6am Saturday to 6am Sunday
  • Warning area covers the eastern half of the Borders, essentially all areas east of the A68
  • Northerly winds of up to 70mph possible
  • Large waves and overtopping in coastal communities possible
  • Risk of fallen trees, travel disruption, power cuts and property damage
  • Further updates will be issued as required.
