Rain and wind weather warnings issued for Scottish Borders

The Met Office has issued two weather warnings today which cover the whole of the Scottish Borders and which both come into effect at 3pm on Friday.

Please note these may be updated prior to them coming into effect. Further updates will be provided as required.

Rain warning:

  • Warning runs from 3pm Friday to 12noon Saturday
  • 50-60mm of rain possible over higher ground, with wintry showers above 300m
  • Some local flooding and transport disruption possible
  • Be prepared for rain and flooding
  • Wind warning:

  • Warning runs from 3pm Friday to 6am on Sunday
  • Coastal areas could experience gusts of up to 80mph
  • Inland gusts could reach 60mph
  • Be prepared for high winds
  • More information:

Storm Darragh could bring a period of strong winds over the weekend. Winds will initially be from a southerly direction, but the strongest winds are likely as the low clears away when northerly or northwesterly winds may quite widely gust to around 40-50 mph inland but locally could gust in excess of 60 mph. Around coasts, winds may gust to 60-70 mph, perhaps locally nearer 80 mph.

The wind may cause disruption to travel, with difficult driving conditions likely. The duration of the strongest winds in any one location is likely to be less than 24 hours, but this warning is for a more extended period to cover the passage of the strong winds over the whole country. These start in the west on Friday evening, and clear from the east coasts of England and Scotland early on Sunday.

See the Met Office website for more information.
